Perlite

Perlite, which is widely used in vegetable growing and ornamental plants, is a very useful substance. It is not as we know it in nature, but in the form of volcanic hard rocks. It explodes at high temperatures. It separates into small white particles like foam grains, increasing in volume up to 15 times. We use it as it is for plants. We come across perlite grains in the soil of most ornamental plants we buy.

What substances does perlite contain?

For plants, the substances contained in its use are of no importance. If you are going to use it alone, you need to mix fertilizer, plant food, agricultural lime, etc., depending on the situation, as well as perlite.

Perlite content: SiO2, Al2O3, K2O, Na2O, CaO, MgO, Fe2O3, TiO2, MnO2, SO3..

Perlite usage purposes in floriculture and agriculture

  • in soilless agriculture.
  • Mixture of peat with soil for ornamental plants. But unfortunately, its structure changes in a few months and it stubbornly holds the salts in the soil, causing the soil to poison the roots. We should definitely not use it in soil mixtures of ornamental plants.
  • It provides an airy and sterile environment for the rooting of perlite cuttings used alone or mixed with half pure peat in plant production by means of steel rooting. There is nothing wrong with this type of use. The best steel rooting soil is a mixture of perlite + pure peat.
  • They also prefer perlite for the germination of seeds of some sensitive plants.
